Chapter One: The Man
We have been searching for him for months. There’s no way we’re going to find him before he moves on to a new place. New victims. The poor poor victims of this man. This man that tortures emotionally and physically for weeks before putting them out of their misery. He’s up to ten of them but there’s been no bodies that were found. Yet. So really we wouldn’t have known it was a serial killer if it wasn’t for the letter we received after the 1st victim.
The letter stated how he was picking out people that deserved to die because everyone deserved to die for something. He stated that we would never find the bodies of them because they will never be dumped. The way he wrote told us that he was very clever and that this meant he was well educated just like the stereotypical serial killer was. It was too perfectly fitting for my taste but I had no evidence to say otherwise.
There was a potential 11th victim of this man but the woman had just disappeared a couple days ago. There was also a 12th victim that was a man. It was rumored that they were taken at the same time but no one was certain about it. The whole town was looking for this woman and man. The whole town was in a frenzy because we were such a small town that no one knew who we were until this psycho started taking people. What made him strange was that he took people from all different areas of this town and all different genders and all different social classes. This made tracking and predicting his movements almost impossible. We couldn’t even know for sure if the people that were disappearing were because of him.
The only thing we knew for certain was that he was a male. This is based off of the fact that he told us he was male. So we didn’t even know that for sure. In other words this case was a cluster fuck and a half. It had everyone in our small team trying to figure it all out. Spencer, Luke, Jazz, Liz, and I were all working over time and basically living off of zero sleep. Not that we could sleep even if we had the chance to. I couldn’t and I assumed no one else could either since we all had the black bags of no sleep under our eyes.
I mean really who would be able to sleep when there was a guy taking people and getting more and more ballsy by the hour. You had to be on the lookout always. You had to be careful in case you saw the man lurking in the shadows or just making sweet conversation to you at the bar.
Ah, yes the classic meeting man at the bar scenario. However, this is not the case for how I, the 11th victim, of this serial killer was taken. Yes, I am that woman that everyone in the whole town has been looking for. I am responsible for the 12th victim as well. I am the reason he was taken.
Now you see you have to have all this background before you can understand how incredibly smart this guy is. It must be confusing about how this FBI agent could have possibly been kidnapped by the very serial killer that her and her team have been looking for. You see this was a plan gone wrong situation, a horrible, plan gone wrong situation.
This was not my idea. Again, this was NOT my idea. It was not my idea to go walking the town “alone” at night to see if he would come out. This in fact was Jazz’s wonderful idea. Honestly, it could have been a good idea she usually does comes up with good ideas. I’m just bitter because I am now stuck here in “my room” writing frantically with a man that could kill me whenever he’s coming back all because of Jazz’s foolproof plan.
Anyways, Jazz’s plan was for me to go for a walk around town to potentially draw out the guy that have been taking all these people. Why me you ask? Don’t worry I ask myself the same question. All the time. The reasoning I got was because I’m fast and could outrun danger and was a quick thinker and did not panic when there was a situation. Fairly sound reasoning I know but I still didn’t have to be happy about it. While I was strolling the streets the rest of my team was in a van not too far away from me to make sure I had back up if anything went wrong. A lot of help that did right? At one point where there was a large tree in between me and the protection van a man approached me.
The man was no stranger to me. I actually knew him fairly well. The man’s name is Jack and I had attended the same college as him but he dropped out half way through his junior year and I had lost contact with him ever since. In college we had talked a fair amount and he always seemed very nice. He was kinda short for a guy he only stood a few inches taller than my 5″5′ figure. He had Icy blue eyes and sandy blond hair that swept across his forehead with a messy flow. He had a deep voice that could make anyone’s heart flutter. His figure was fairly petite but you could tell that he had muscle as well. He also had a dusting of freckles across his face. He was definitely eye candy but not in the typical way.
“Veronica Blair?” His deep voice snuck up on me and threw me off guard. I didn’t realize he remembered me from almost five years ago.
“Hello, Jack Summer, it’s been a while. I thought you’ve forgotten about me.” I replied, lazily smirking at him.
“How could I forget someone with a mind like yours?” He replied with a smile.
Is he flirting with me? I thought to myself. He always did have that personality back in the day. “You haven’t changed a bit since college. Have you?” I countered, trying to stay focused on the plan.
“Oh you’d be surprised,” he noted, eyes shimmering in the streetlights. Then added, “What are you doing out and about? Haven’t you been paying attention to the news? It’s dangerous for people to be out and about after dark.” He mocked scolding me.
“I can take care of myself. I really was just craving a milkshake.” I easily lied because there was a 24/7 place just around the corner. “What are you doing out this late? Haven’t you heard about the guy taking people? It’s been on the news.” I threw his own words back at him jokingly.
He laughed and replied in the same teasing tone. “I can take care of myself. Plus, I was just really craving a milkshake.”
I just laughed not really knowing what to say. “Well, it’s been nice chatting, Jack, I should get going before it gets too late.”
“Let me walk you to the store. It’ll be safer that way.” Jack insisted with a smile.
I didn’t really want to be rude about it so I accepted the suggestion. Plus there was no way for me to be like hey it’s probably better if you didn’t cuz I’m an FBI agent and I’m in the middle of an investigation. There was a part of me that felt like that wasn’t a good idea. Also it would look more convincing to whoever is taking the people for me to be with someone else. I’m sure my team is very confused about who this guy is but I’ll explain it to them later.
Just before we approached the road that the store was on there was another side road that we had to pass and there was a van that wasn’t my teams van on the road that we had to pass. All my senses tingles and I just knew that that van was out of place. I picked up my space as we passed my it leaving Jack slightly behind me. Just as I had passed the van safely I heard a yell and I turned just in time to see Jack being grabbed.
Fuck. The part of me that swore to protect everyone kicked in. I dead sprinted toward the van. My adrenaline filled body was not about to let Jack be stolen away. Yes, I know I hardly knew him but damn it I knew he didn’t deserve to be kidnapped by a sketchy van. I flung myself, without thinking, through the closing van doors.
