Chapter Ten: The Final Chapter
“Veronica Blair, Veronica Blair, Veronica Blair,” Jack slowly crooned my name causing my heart to thump against my chest. I couldn’t speak. “You always did have a soft spot for a sob story. You should see your face right now. It’s priceless really.” He paused to chuckle knowing he had the upper hand. I should have known it was a team of serial killers. He was too good at hiding his true self. Until now that is. Of course my phone is in the living room. “You know if you’re not scared we could be lovers and you can live,” he mused, breaking into my thoughts.
“If I come with you, will you let my team live too?” I asked, cursing myself for letting my trusting nature get the better of me.
“Of course not. We can’t have witnesses,” he responded sweetly. He krept closer to me unable to resist the temptation to taunt me further.
“Jack you’re the smart one here. Why did you ask a question that you already knew the answer to?” My voice came out surprisingly steady despite my uncertainty about the situation.
“Can’t you see, Veronica, your heart is going to get you killed!” He exclaimed, causing my ears to ring slightly.
Yeah you’re telling that to the woman who developed a crush on a crazy person. I thought dryly to myself then my abdomen tightened and I suddenly became nauseous. “My heart makes me human.” I spat, finding the ability to move again I threw the bedding at him and bolted for the door. As soon as my hand grasped the handle there was suddenly a burning sensation in my scalp and I was pinned against a warm mass of flesh.
I felt the cold metal against the tender skin of my temple and this was the moment when I knew. I knew that this was the moment when I was out smarted. “Veronica Blair, have you ever thought about death?” He spoke quietly so his warm breath danced up and down my neck causing my breath to catch in my throat.
“Death is the only adventure that you can not retell, but we all experience it in the end.” I breathed, my voice wavering slightly.
“Now that’s the best answer yet. I knew your mind was special.” Jack sighed, while caressing my hair. Still holding the cold metal gun to my temple. “I’ll almost regret killing you.”
