My Killer, My Lover, and Me

Chapter seven: The Surprise

After a few minutes of listening to banging and mutterings of Matt in the kitchen he paused to stick his head through the window. “Okay I’ll tell you what the surprise is,” he slurred. “You both are free to go.”

Jack and I gave each other a look that said. Is he serious?

“Didn’t you two hear me? I said get the fuck out of my house! I’ve had my fun now I want to be alone. The door is unlocked.” Matt yelled then fell over and passed out on the kitchen floor.

I didn’t have to look to know that Jack was right behind me. My feet flew towards the front door. My hand grasped the cold handle and ripped the door open. The fresh air hit my lungs and I was suddenly filled with hope. My eyes took in the pink and orange sunset as I dashed down the steps. I sucked down the air as I forced my legs to run faster. I could hear Jack breathing next to me. We didn’t look back. We just ran. Step one of our escape plan is now complete. Now we just need to reach the main road so we can get to a place where I could contact my team.

We ran until we physically could not run anymore. The dirt road we were running down seemed to stretch out forever, but I could hear the traffic from the main road now. Neither of us spoke. We didn’t need to. We made the plan. We will get to my team.

“Now that we are out of that hell hole I need to warn you about something.” Jack breathed resting for a moment on the ground.

“What do you need to warn me about?” I shot back, stretching the stich in my side, wishing I had water.

“Matt’s my brother.” He stated in between breaths. “He has been my guardian since our parents died when we were kids. I couldn’t tell you everything inside the house for obvious reasons. I was also scared that you wouldn’t trust me anymore.” He spoke fast clearly preparing for a negative response from me.

I studied his face for a moment and saw that he was hiding nothing. “Thank you for telling me. I would rather you tell me than hear it from someone else.” I assured him. “You ready to keep moving?”

“With that huge weight off my should absolutely,” he smiled. “Race you to the main road.”

My feet dug into the dirt and pushed off once again. The wind whipped my hair off of my face and I could feel the sweat drip down my neck as we ran. Almost free.
