My Killer, My Lover, and Me

Chapter Eight: My Team

My eyes snapped to the white van approaching us as we ran towards the road. The van had a dent in the front bumper that looked suspiciously like the dent that I made while confronting a tree while driving my teams van. As the license plate came into view I saw the Serial K on it and knew that Luke, Spencer, Jazz, and Liz were inside the van. I skidded to a stop in the gravel and started to frantically wave my hands.

“What are you doing?” Jack questioned stopping just in front of me.

“That’s my team!” I exclaimed while jumping up and down. Hoping that they were paying attention in the rapidly darkening light. The van drove by then screeched to a stop. The back doors flew open and the faces of my team peaked out of the back of the van.

“I knew that crazy lady in the road was Veronica,” the welcoming sass of Jazz spilled out towards us.

“Jack I have some people that will need to talk to you but they will also protect you from Matt.” I grabbed Jacks hand without even thinking about it and pulled him towards the van.

“Who’s the random guy that you stupidly flung yourself into a serial killers van for?” Liz noted in her usually sarcastic tone.

I looked at Jack and let a smirk crawl over my face. “Let’s just say we went to college together. We have many things to catch up on.” I replied as Luke pulled me into the van. Then pulled Jack in.

“My name’s Jack Summers. Veronica has told me lots about you guys.” He smiled.

“Oh really now?” Luke replied, raising his eyebrows. “How about you two start catching us up on our way back.”

“Of course,” I responded, “but how did you guys even find us?”

“We followed you for as long as we could the night you were taken, but then you just disappeared in this area so we kept looking hoping that we would be able to stumble across the place you were being kept.” Spencer explained from the driver’s seat.

“When you opened the door I couldn’t believe that you weren’t even tied up or kept in a room or something.” Luke explained. “How did you two escape though?”

“Well, Matt, said that he had a surprise for us then went out for a while and got drunk then let us go.” Jack summarized.

I could tell by my team’s faces that they were just as confused as I was about this whole situation. As Jack and I took turns reaccounting the past few weeks their frowns deepened.

“If he knew everything about you I don’t understand why he would let you both go, but that’s not important right now. What is important is that you are back, and Jack is now free of his brother.” Liz replied, smiling from the passenger seat.

“Alright, that’s enough talk of serial killers tonight. We can pick all this up in the morning. Let’s get something to eat.” Jazz suggested.

My stomach suddenly growled when food was mentioned, which reminded me that neither Jack or I ate lunch. “I would kill for a good burger and fries and a milkshake. It’s been too long since I’ve been able to choose my own meal.”

“That sounds delicious,” Jack agreed.

“I know just the place,” Spencer replied, while pulling onto the main road.
