There has always been part of me that belonged to the sea. There is no escaping it. When I am not by the blue sparkling mass of water that seems to stretch on forever I feel an ache in my chest. My favorite place in the world is sitting at the very end of the beach on the largest bolder looking out to the sea. One day as I am sitting in my favorite spot enjoying the view of the empty sea I saw a new sight that I would come to learn would change my life forever.
As I squinted my eyes against the sun I saw a dot- no it was bigger than a dot- a smudge? No, wait! Is that a man? I saw this mass that could possibly be a man get hung up on some rocks not too far away from me. I didn’t have to think about what I was doing when I gathered up my dress and rushed over the the small row boat that was near by.
Once I was seated in the boat I started to steadily pull the ors through the water. My shoulders burned from the use of muscles I haven’t used for a while (I mean who needs muscles when your a woman in the 1700s?).
By the time I got to the pile of rocks I could see that the man had slipped off his makeshift raft and was half in the water while the other half clung to the rocks. My eyes caught the dark red stains of red on his shirt. “Excuse me, sir, would you like some help? You seem injured.” I called as I approached him not even sure if this man is still alive.
I saw the body slowly lift up his head and squint at me. “Are you the one who has been sent to kill the prince of pirates?” His voice was low and garbled.
Okay, so this man is delirious from the sun. Time to take him to grandmother’s house. I thought to myself. I steadied the boat so that I could haul this man into it. As soon as my arms hooked under his arms he started talking again.
“You’re not the one trying to kill me? A rescuer is always a friend to me.” He let his head flop back so he could take in my face.
“I’m trying to get you into my row boat so I can get you to a place where I can properly patch you up. What’s your name?” I asked managing to get him into the boat without flipping the boat.
“Zara, prince of the pirates and captain of the ship Zargoza. Who are you?” he muttered still sounding crazy. I had never heard of a pirate prince. I’m sure gramother Opal will be able to fix him up.
“Amber, the keeper of the forests,” I replied with a smile. I took in his dark sun kissed skin with dried out skin from days on the water. His grey eyes seem kind but also guarded. He couldn’t be much older than me. His frame told me that he hadn’t eaten in a long time.
“If I don’t die today, Amber, I’ll be forever in your debt,” he stated before collapsing to the bottom of the boat.
Great. How am I supposed to get him up the cliff to grandmother’s? I thought to myself returning to the beach.
