My One True Desire

Maydire is the only being that I trust. She made it easy to trust her swirling eyes of honey and chocolate tones of brown. Her velvety nose gently nuzzling your hand before she rests her head on your shoulder. I wrapped my strong arms around her strong neck and held onto her long mane. I pressed my cheek against her black silky coat that sparkled in the fading light. I pulled back to look at my gorgeous steed. “Are you ready for our long journey?” I breathed, so quietly that my word could be mistaken for the wind snaking through the forest that surrounded the stables.

She pushed warm air out of her nose and stomped her hooves letting me know she is ready. I swung myself up onto her bareback after making sure my pack was secured to her. I touched the secret pocket in my breast where I kept two viles of poison. One for my victim, Mayor Marcus, and one for myself in case things went wrong.

I encouraged Maydire to run fast. The wind brushed my hair away from my face. The easy part was getting to Mayor Marcus and blending in. No one suspects a woman to be the one observing, waiting patiently for the opportunity to kill. The hard part was not setting off any alarms once in the mare’s house. The party tonight is my only chance to complete the job. If I fail someone else would be sent to complete what I couldn’t. I’ve never failed the Monarch before and I won’t tonight.

I could already see the Mayor’s house even though we were fifteen minutes away. I could see the sickening glow from his mansion. If those walls could talk… As Maydire trotted closer I could hear the sounds of music and laughter drifting out into the night. “Sounds like a nice party. Doesn’t it Maydire? It’s almost a shame to ruin it.” I uttered to her as I hid her near by. I let my fingers run through her mane and over her glossy coat as she started to eat some grass. Knowing she’ll stay until I come back I through up my hood and walked towards the mansion ready to complete the job.

Once I was inside I lowered my hood, it was not long until the Mayor spotted me. I knew he spotted me when his eyes lit up and started to walk away from the group of woman he was flirting with. Perfect. My plan is already working.

“Why hello there, darling!” Mayor Marcus boomed spewing spit and the smell of alcohol in my face as he spoke. “I’ll get you a drink.” He added, “Hey! You! Server! Get this beautiful lady a drink!”

“You are too kind, sir,” I giggled, while batting my eyelashes at him, turning on my charm. I can’t wait to rid this earth of your filth. I thought to myself.

He scanned my body with his eyes which felt like a violation of my privacy, but I kept my smile. Soon he will die. I just need to be patient.

“Have I seen you somewhere before?” The Mayor questioned, his eyes looking everywhere but my face.

Funny that he asks. I thought dryly. It’s been years since Mayor Marcus has seen me. More like forced himself to see all of me just like he has done to so many other woman.

“Not unless we’ve met in your dreams,” I flirted smoothly, while accepting the drink the server brought over. I pretended to take a sip.

“That must be it,” he mused chuckling slightly. “Let’s dance.” He added taking me towards the dance floor.

After dancing for what seemed like forever the Mayor paused. “All that dancing has made me thirsty, where is that server?” He muttered.

“Please, sir, allow me,” I spoke sweetly, making sure my grin was flirtatious and not a grimace.

“Make sure to get yourself one as well,” he accepted the offer.

Now is my chance. I left him sitting at a table that was by some guests who immediately started chatting with the mare. I sweetly asked the bartender for two drinks. I snuck a look at the Mayor to make sure he was distracted then slipped into an extra room to slip him my surprise. I snuck out of the room unnoticed and rejoined the Mayor.

“Ah! There’s my new beautiful lady friend.” The Mayor exclaimed his face bright with lust.

I smiled and handed him his drink. Just keep the act up until the poison takes it’s course.

“My savior,” he accepted the drink. Then after taking a long sip added, “How about we call it a night and I show you where the real party is?”

I could tell by the way he said it that I’d be shown the real party no matter what I said. Knowing that the poison would take a little while to take it’s course I knew I had to go along with the Mayor until he was dead. “You’re in luck, I love real parties,” I giggled, pretending I did not know what he meant.

He downed the rest of his drink and snatched my arm and pulled me off to a darker hallway. My breath quickened slightly, recognizing the hall that lead to his dreaded bedroom. Our footsteps echoed off the stone walls as we walked closer and closer to the place where it all began. Now it will be the place it ends too. He threw open his bedroom door and roughly grabbed my arms and moved me to the bed. His movements were getting more stiff. Finally, the poison is working it’s magic.

“Get naked!” He yelled, his words slurring.

“No.” I replied, calmly. Letting the smirk crawl across my face.

“No?” He questioned, his voice filled with confusion. He had his shirt mostly undone and his pants were open.

“It means I reject your command,” I spoke losing my sweet tone. I watched as the Mayor started to sputter and squirm as my poison took it’s hold.

“W-w-why?” He choked clearly starting to struggle for oxygen.

“It’s simple, Marcus, when we met the first time you took something that was not yours to take, and now I’m taking your life as a favor to all the people you have hurt,” I crooned, watching as he squirmed.

His face contorted into a grimace for a moment then his body went completely limp. I checked his heart rate for a pulse to make sure my job was done. There was nothing.

Knowing my job was done. I slipped out of the first story window and dropped to the ground. Dashing from shadow to shadow I made my way to Maydire. Reaching her I wrapped my arms around her neck letting the relief fill me. I, Safire Dire, have stopped the man who has scared so many people for years. “Maydire, the job is done. It’s time to go home.” I breathed to my faithful partner as we vanished into the night the wind tossing my long hair in the wind.
