My bare feel slapped the cobblestone floor, the wind tossed my straight black hair over my shoulder as I dashed through the halls towards the courtyard. My shoes were long gone since it’s impractical to do pretty much anything in heels so running in them was out of the question. I had my dress clutched in my fists to make sure I didn’t trip on my way to see the beast.
I made it to the balcony that looked over the expansive courtyard which stretched all the way to the walls of the castle. However, there was the largest most incredible creature sitting in the middle of it all. The creature had its back to me keeping its focus on the many guards surrounding it. The beast had sparkling scales that were as dark as the night skies. The tail swished back and forth in anticipation the moonlight glinting off of the glossy surface. The wings were folded up tightly against it’s back to protect them from getting torn by the arrows. The bellows of fear quickly turned into one of fury as the guards started to attack it. Before getting injured the beautiful beast turned it’s head and seemed to look directly into my soul. The huge golden eyes held centuries of wisdom and knowledge within them. I was not afraid but in awe of the wonderful beast that was before me. I was told these types of creatures did not exist and that they were invented by story tellers.
Who are you? A deep gravely voice echoed in my head.
I stared at the beast slowly lumber towards me. It flicked its tails impatiently. “Esmerelda Garrikson,” I breathed. “Who are you?”
The pair of golden eyes were now at eye level with my hazel eyes. The snout of the beast was inches away from my body. It exhaled a breath which caused smoke to envelope my face and the smell of smoldering wood to enter my nostrils. I do not have a name in your tongue but you may call me Gorgavitch. Why do you not fear me like others of your kind do?
“I do not fear something that has not given me a reason to do so. You, Gorgavitch are a majestic creature that I have never encountered before. I do not believe in destroying the things I do not understand. I cannot speak for others of my kind, but I promise that I am telling you the truth.” I spoke honestly while closing the distance between us. I gently rested my hand on his snout. His scales were as smooth as glass and thicker than metal. I could feel the heat of the fire burning within him through his thick scales. When my hand touched his snout he flinched slightly as if I could hurt him. “Why do you flinch at my touch?”
Your kind has hunted my brothers and sisters in the past which is why we had to slip away and be forgotten. You are the first human to reach out a hand and mean no harm by it. I need your help. The low rumble of a voice seemed desperate.
“I will not hurt you. Creatures like yourself should be respected and maybe we humans could actually learn a thing or two. Why do you need my help?” I spoke reassuringly.
I need a companion to help me retrieve all of my remaining brothers and sisters in the human world and lead them to the safe place. He pressed his snout into my torso gently. I’ll be killed if I do it on my own and you are the first human who has not attacked me. Will you come with me?
“Yes,” I replied with no hesitation. I had nothing here now that the rest of my family had died from the sickness. I’m at the age where I’m going to be married off to some guy that doesn’t love me. If I can help save more of these creatures from being destroyed I will.
Great, brace yourself and hold on tight. He commanded while wrapping his claws around my torso and gently swinging me to his back.
I nestled myself in between two spikes and was able to hold onto his neck surprisingly well. I felt my entire body lurch back as Gorgavitch lumbered back around destroying more of the surrounding area with his tail. Once we were facing the horizon he leapt into the night air while snapping his impressive wings into the air. The wind stung my face and caused my eyes to water as we left the ground. I felt my stomach drop as I watched the castle I grew up in slowly shrink as we flew farther away. The night aided us as we became cloaked in its darkness protecting us from the prying eyes of the guards that will soon be busy searching for me. I tucked myself closer to the beasts torso to protect myself from the wind and to keep myself warm. “Where are we going?” I yelled into the wind.
My cave. We have to prepare for our journey, Esmerelda. You should try to rest it is a long flight. His voice may have been deep and gravely but there was a comforting kindness to it.
I rest my face against the smooth scales of his neck and let the gentle sway of Gorgavitch’s wings flapping lull me to sleep as the moon lit our path through the night.
