The Conquered Beast (Continued 2)

I slept surprisingly well on the beast’s back as we flew. When I woke to Gorgavitch landing in a grassy field that was surrounded by a forest. “Are we there already?” I yawned while stretching.

A chuckle that sounded like an avalanche came tumbling out of his mouth in response. The chuckle made his entire body tremble. “Not yet, almost, it’s best we stay low during the day. I need to rest for a while, we will start traveling again tonight. There is a fresh water spring over there. Don’t eat the red berries if you are hungry.” His voice echoed off the water and the surrounding hills.

I slid off his back so I could look around more. It seemed like we were on an island in the middle of an ocean. The water stretched into the horizon squinting at the rising sun. I saw the lovely looking spring I walked over to the edge of the spring. I kneeled in the soft dirt so I could drink the cold water. I spotted the red berries Gorgavitch was talking about. I found a patch of black berries that tasted sweet and made my taste buds tingle.

Once I was done eating berries and drinking water I found a large tree at the edge of the clearing to sit under while Gorgavitch rested. Now that it was daylight I could see the details of the beast laying in front of me. His shinny black scales moved up and down as his sleep deepened. Every once in a while a cloud of smoke would slither out of his nostrils. While curled up he was the size of a small mountain. His leathery wings laid flat on his back covering his body. I could see that on each of his four legs he had clawes with sharp daggers attached to them. If this creature had wanted to hurt me he would have already. The part I’m unsure of is how I am able to help save his race. Why me? How can a human help a creature as powerful as this one?

I wonder if anyone has noticed that I’m no longer in the castle? I’m sure there’s a search party out looking for me by now, but there is no way I’m going back there. I have no one there. They only want me back so I can be married off to some man that doesn’t love me.

The hair on the back of my neck pricked as the unmistakable sound of a snarl broke my train of thought. I glanced up to see a pair of huge yellow eyes staring at me from the shadows of the forest. My heart stopped for a moment as more pairs of eyes started to emerge from the shadows. “Gorgavitch!” I intended for my voice to come out in a yell loud enough to wake him but my voice squeeked out his name as the feeling of fear overwhelmed me. I scrambled backwards as fast as my limbs would let me. Please, wake up Gorgavitch. I thought to myself as the creatures from the forests started to lumber towards me drooling and showing off their fangs.
