Safire Dire and Maydire

Main characters from My One True Desire

After giving Maydire a good brushing and feeding her I let her roam as I usually do while I climb up to my rest spot. I close my eyes for a few hours.

The sound of a twig snapping woke me from my rest. I bolt to attention grabbing my knife as I looked around. Just below me I spot a slender man walking towards Maydire.

I silently grab my bow and climb out to the branch that is just above him. “Who the hell are you?” I ask after pulling back my bow.

“A stranger passing through parts that are unfamiliar to me,” he spoke quickly and smoothly while raising his hands above his head turning to me.

I rolled my eyes. “That’s the obvious part. My question is who the hell are you? I will not repeat myself again.” I adjusted my bow to let him know I was being serious.

“Okay, okay. My name is Maxwell. I was a prisoner and I’m on the run and need a way out of this town and I saw your horse and thought I could use it to get out of here.” He explained quickly realizing that the truth would make things easier on him.

I hopped down from the tree so I could face him. “Well you wouldn’t have gotten far with Maydire.” I chuckled, “She is the most loyal creature there is.” As if she understood me she walked over to me and nudged my hair with her snout affectionately.

“In that case is there a chance you could get me out of here?” He pleaded. “I can pay you once we get to where I’m going.” He added with a smile.

“I don’t typically get myself wrapped up in helping prisoners escape. However I do need some money. How much?” I raised an eyebrow.

“Enough.” he smirked at me, “So what do you say?”

“I say it better be enough or you’ll be a dead man.” I warn then turned to Maydire. “What do you say? Want to help me make some money for us?” She blew warm air into my face and stomped her feet in anticipation.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way Miss-?” His attitude was very charismatic almost too much but there was something about him that I couldn’t quite figure out.

“Safire.” I replied shortly. I grab the blanket that I use to cushion her back. The sun was just starting to rise now. I hoist myself onto her back making sure my small pack of items were secured to my side. “Maxwell, hop on before I change my mind.” This is a bad idea I thought to myself. I need the money though. Maydire seems to be okay with him she has more trust in people than I do.
