Are my eyes open or closed? I thought to myself as I regained consciousness. I blinked really hard. Once. Twice. Still only darkness. Am I blind? Before the panic set in a stabbing pain blossomed on the left side of my chest and throbbed all the way to my right side. Nothing seemed broken. Definitely cracked but that’s nothing considering I fell from… somewhere I can’t quite remember. I looked up in time to catch a brilliant flash of light.
Once my vision returned I could see so many stars. I knew they were stars because my astronomy major told me they were, but they are not the stars I knew. There were no constellations that I recognized which told me that I was a long way from my cozy cabin by the ocean. How did I get here? Where is here? Why am I here? I slowly convinced my body to sit upright with a sharp in hale of pain I sat up. My hand landed in soft dirt as I shifted feeling around my body to make sure I wasn’t bleeding. From what I could tell I was still wearing that sweatshirt that I told my brother I was borrowing about five years ago now, and a pair of sweatpants. At least I can breathe on this planet but I’m going need to find shelter soon because I’m already feeling the cold seep through my layers. I gingerly got to my feet and was about to start walking when I heard two loud low voices coming from behind me. I was relieved when I could understand words like “we have to get back to the ship!” and “come on hurry!” Maybe they can help me out. I turned and saw lights that were heading towards me. I waved towards them hoping they were friendly. I could see their silhouettes against their lights and it seemed like there were two males. After waving for a few minutes they seemed to not notice me and they were starting to pass by me.
“Hey wait!” The words left my mouth and I watched as the lights paused. My chest tightened as they started to come towards me.
“What was that?” A man with a loud booming voice asked.
“I see something,” a man with a low gravely voice spoke.
I forced my feet to move closer to them. “I’m not armed. I need help.” I spoke to them as I got closer hoping that I could befriend them.
“That something is a woman by the looks of her.” The loud voice spoke as I came into their light. “A human woman.”
“What’s a human woman doing here? There’s not supposed to be any humans on this planet.” The low gravely voice spoke.
“I don’t know. I woke up here. I saw a flash of light in the sky and then I heard the two of you.” I explained, pleading with my eyes for them to believe me. I clutched my side as pain danced up my sides.
“It sounds like you’re lost and it looks like you’re hurt.” The loud voiced man came into full view as my eyes adjusted to the harsh lights. His build was similar to the build of a wrestler, but had a basketball player worthy height to him. In normal circumstances I would have been frightened of him but his smile was so genuine that it wrinkled the corners of his eyes. I couldn’t help but to trust him immediately.
“Yes to both. I don’t even recognize the stars or know what planet I’m on.” I rambled while realizing that I sounded completely nuts. I turned my hazel eyes towards the gravely voiced man who was standing quietly observing me. His figure was similar to a professional swimmer’s and came to about the shoulder of the other man. They didn’t scare me eventhough they could easily kill me at any moment.
“Give us a moment to talk stranger.” The gravely voiced man spoke thoughtfully, while motioning for his partner to walk out of my hearing range.
“Don’t worry about him. He doesn’t like strangers it just takes him some time to open up. I can tell you’re telling the truth. Nothing is crazier than the truth.” The tall man whispered to me with a wink before talking to the other man.
As they talked I tried to make out more of my surroundings. I could feel my body temperature dropping as I looked around. I could see lumbering dark shapes that could be trees outside of this clearing I had landed in. It’s obviously a planet where I can breathe just fine. I wrapped my arms around my body to protect myself against the cold. I could feel my heart leaping against my ribcage as I waited. I saw the two men exchange hand gestures and at points I could hear their voices get louder but not enough so that I could make out words. After no more than five minutes but what felt like an eternity later the two men walked back over to me.
