The Pirate Prince (Continued)

I couldn’t help but notice the rough calluses on his hands as he pulled me up. His grey eyes caught my dark brown eyes in a gaze that made my cheeks warm slightly. “So where do you plan on taking your ship whenever you’re ready?” I questioned as we made our way back up the path to the main house.

“Ah, that is the question. Since whoever it was who was trying to kill me hasn’t shown up after all this time I could go almost anywhere,” he sighed for a moment looking off into the distance. “I think I’ll take it somewhere warm.” He paused for a moment to give me a sideways glance, “Where would you take it if you could go anywhere?”

His question caught me off guard. Now that’s a good question. “I have never been anywhere before. I would take it anywhere I could.” I answered while looking at him.

Grandmother Opal was sitting on the porch in her chair reading on of her many books. “Perfect timing. I’ll go serve up the food.” She exclaimed when she saw us then got up and disappeared into the house.

“Thank you!” We called in unison after her.

Zara caught my arm before we went inside. “Do you want to come with me when I go?” His voice was sincere.

My heart squeezed with excitement of the thought of seeing more of the world. “Yes, I do want to go with you.” I paused feeling an aching pang of guilt in my gut at the thought of leaving my grandmother alone. “However, I cannot leave my grandmother alone in her old age.” I added gently.

A smile danced across his face. “I understand. I should have guessed I wouldn’t be able to tempt you away from the only family you have left.” He chuckled as he lead the way inside.

Once we were inside we sat at the dinning table to eat the beef stew and dinner rolls grandmother Opal made. The warm stew and soft rolls were amazing as usual.

“How is that ship of yours coming along, Zara?” Opal asked turning to him.

“I just need to put some sails on it and I’ll be good to go. I should be able to take off by the end of the week.” He replied.

“Then I can only assume that will be when we say goodbye, Amber,” she turned to me with a warm smile and her voice was light.

My face must have shown my surprise and protest because she continued before I could say anything.

“I always have known that you would be leaving one day. I have always been content here. You have always craved adventure. I would love nothing more than to know that you are off having the adventures of your dreams.” She spoke firmly but gently. She turned to Zara, “I have seen how you have been looking at my granddaughter. I know you will ask her to go with you if you haven’t already.” She flashed him a knowing smile.

I didn’t have the words to express the excitement and love that I felt for my grandmother, so I stood up and pulled her into a huge hug. “If I am able I will send you detailed letters whenever I can. I’ll come back to visit whenever you ask.” I assured her.

She gave me a smile and patted my back. “I trust you won’t get into any trouble that you can’t get out of on your adventures. If I’m still alive when you come back I’ll look forward to hearing about them.”

Zara and I cleaned up everything from dinner and put away the leftover food while Opal went to bed.

Now that I knew that my grandmother wanted me to go off and have my own adventures how could I pass up the opportunity? “Zara, if your offer is still open I will come with you.” I spoke quietly so I wouldn’t keep Opal awake.

“Of course,” he replied, “I’m used to traveling alone, but I like being around you so the company would be nice.

The following days were filled with laughter and packing and gathering other supplies for our adventure. I still couldn’t believe that I was actually going to be seeing more of the world. The days dragged on but also flew by faster than I wanted.

Now today is the day that Zara and I set sail. I am writing this after tearfully saying goodbye to grandmother Opal and as we are sailing away from the only place that I’ve called home.

“Amber, where are we going?” Zara asks with a smile.

“Some place warm and everywhere in between.” I reply, smiling as the wind tossed my hair over my shoulder. The sea breeze throwing salt water into my face and the sun on my face was only the beginning of my adventure with the pirate prince.

“Aye aye Captain Amber,” Zara laughed and pointed the ship towards the horizon.

The end.
