“Is that what you two are calling it? Friendship?” Oliver teased while walking over to us after pressing a few more buttons.
“Shut up,” Sébastien grumbled, while turning a darker shade of pink.
“I’m just saying when they’re together they act more than friends.” Oliver sassed with a roll of his eyes as he sat next to me.
“Let me go get that medical scanner to make sure there’s no internal bleeding.” Sébastien changed the subject as he abruptly got up from the table.
After a few minutes of silence Oliver spoke. “So you really haven’t been to space before?” He stared at me with such an intense curiosity that I could feel his gaze on my skin which cause goosebumps to appear.
“Never. I’ve always been curious about space though. I’ve studied it for my entire life. This experience just proves how little I really know about space. It’s beautiful and so interesting and terrifying. I always wanted to visit space. I almost did but then everything on Earth went to shit.” I recalled with a shrug hoping he wouldn’t pry. I really didn’t want to get into the details.
He stared at me like he wanted to ask more but instead asked. “Do you want to see a map of all the places we know about?” He stood up from the bench while still gazing at me.
“Sure,” I replied unable to break eyecontact with his green eyes and moved to get up from the bench.
“Hey, JJ can you bring up a map of all the places we’ve been to, please?” He spoke to the space in front of him.
“Here is the map Oliver.” A female robotic voice replied from the ship.
“Thank you,” he answered as a screen with a map appeared in front of us. He tilted the screen towards me. “You can touch the screen to move the map around but we’ve been to fifty maybe more different galaxies so far. You can see the names on the map, but The Milky Way is a new one even for us. Is it nice there?” He cocked his head to the right as he asked.
“It’s hard to say since I haven’t been to the other planets but Earth is okay. It used to be nicer but recently it’s been getting worse.” I replied shrugging not exactly lying but I was definitely avoiding the whole truth about Earth. I was just amazed by the sheer mass of the map that they had already. I didn’t recognize any of the places.
He kept gazing at me like he had never seen a woman in an obviously too large sweatshirt and sweatpants with a coffee stain on the front before. “Rachel, you are human right?”
“Correct. Are you and Sébastien?” I questioned suddenly realizing that I’m the alien in this situation.
“Yes,” he replied with a slight chuckle. “Strange how humans get around but also get lost from each other. You, Rachel, have my interest. I won’t grill you with questions all night but the more you’re around the more I want to know.” He paused for a moment. “After your medical scan I could show you around the ship if you’re up for it.” He offered.
“I would love that!” I exclaimed unable to contain my excitement. I couldn’t help but feel excited. How many people get offered a tour of a spaceship? Not many from where I come from.
“Where you’re from must be a little behind in technology when it comes to space travel, right?” He commented basing his assumption off of my facial expression while looking around.
“You could say that again we can travel a little but not like this.” I explained while gesturing around at the ship. “They are too busy with making money and waging pointless wars.”
Before Oliver could respond Sébastien returned with the medical scanner. “Here we are! I brought some other supplies just in case.” He spoke as he waved me over to the table again.
I walked so I was sitting across from him.
“Now in order for the scan to be more accurate it would be helpful if you took off your sweatshirt. However if you’re not comfortable we can make do.” He spoke politely.
I remembered that I had a sports bra on under my sweatshirt. “I don’t mind.” I assured them with a smile before slipping the sweatshirt over my head.
He nodded then pushed a button on the underside of the table so it moved out of his way so he could scan me easier. “Try to hold still.” He spoke as he held up a tool that looked like an oversized flashlight with a screen and buttons. He held the machine a few inches away from my ribcage which was already turning a dark black color. A purple colored light came out of the front of the scanner while it made a high pitched tone. As the light ran over my skin I felt a tingly sensation dance over me where ever it touched. In fact the whole process ended up giving me goosebumps.
“Are you cold?” Oliver asked while looking at my arms.
“No. I think it’s just the scanner. We don’t have these types of medical scanners,” I spoke with my voice slightly pinched while trying my best not to squirm at the ticklish sensation running over my ribs.
