The Conquered Beast (Continued 3)

I don’t know if Gorgavitch leapt or flew, but all I felt was the rush of wind flip my hair into my face. When I pushed my hair back I looked up to see the underside of a scaly neck and chin of the beast. Even from upside down I could see the fierce expression he was making at the wolves. His bright golden eyes were fixated on the hurd of wolves that were slowly coming out towards me. His jet black scales shimmered in the lowering sun. There was a low growl coming from his chest.

Protect your ears. His gravely voice echoed in my head.

Just as I threw my hands over my ears I could feel the bellowing roar that he let lose onto the snarling wolves all the way in my core. The wolves snarls quickly turned to yipps of fear, and they scattered off into the woods with their tails tucked between their legs. I leaned against Gorgavitch’s leg and let out a sigh of relief. “Thank you, Gorgavitch. I surely would have been a goner if you hadn’t scared them off.”

“There’s no need to thank me. Saving a friend is a privilege.” He chuckled lowering himself to my eye level.

I walked over to his snout, which was about the same high as me with sharp white fangs for teeth that glowed against his midnight black scaly body, and stretched on my tiptoes to give him a kiss of appreciation. “I am certainly glad to have a friend like you.” I assured him. Then paused for a moment as a thought occured to me “If you don’t mind me asking, how are you able to speak to me silently in my head and outloud?”

“I was wondering when you were going to start asking questions,” he started sounding amused. “Creatures of my kind have certain abilities they vary slightly depending on the creature you meet. I happen to have the ability to put my thoughts into anothers brain. Before you ask no I can’t read your thoughts. However, I have been known to spit lightning on occasion.” He paused to chuckled at my eyebrows raising in surprise. “I know you probably have more questions about this whole situation, but let’s talk over a proper meal I am starving.” He suggested.

“For a creature who claims to not read minds can read mine suspiciously well.” I smirked. “Yes I have questions and I think a proper meal sounds great. What did you have in mind?”

“A surprise. If you gather some twigs and wood I’ll move some rocks so we can start a fire. Do humans eat their meat raw or ruined?” He sassed at me.

“If by ruined you mean cooked to avoid getting sick. I like my meat ruined.” I sassed back. I never thought that this giant elegant creature could exist let alone be the first friend I made.

“Excuse my manners. It’s been a good century since I’ve interacted with humans. When I did back in the day they tried to kill off everyone I loved. You’re the first to be kind to me.” His voice was gentle and laced with old pain.

“As far as I knew the creatures described like you are legends. They are mostly depicted as destroyers and taker of treasure. I think there are too many humans that would rather take the things they don’t understand and twist them into things that should be feared.” I explained.

“The creatures human literature depicts is accurate in the sense that there are pure evil creatures of my kind that seek to destroy and take treasure. However, the majority of us are kind hearted creatures. It’s unfortunate that humans tend to only remember the bad.” His voice trailed off as he looked into the distance. Then walked off to start gathering rocks.

By the time I had finished collecting enough wood to maintain a fire he had gathered enough stones to create a fire pit. The sky was just starting to become various hues of orange, pink and purple.

“It’s the perfect time to get us something to eat.” He noted while looking at the sunset.

“Before you go. Could you give me a hand with starting the fire please?” I asked while gazing at him.

He gave me an impish look that told me he was secretly teasing me.

“What? Not everyone can shoot mass amounts of heat out of them.” I rolled my eyes.

He just chuckled as he lit the fire for me. “Yell if you need me.” He called over his shoulder as he took off into the woods causing the ground to shake slightly as he walked.
