The tall lanky man was sprinting up the street towards me. When he spotted me he slowed his pace to a jog and came up to me with his chocolate brown hair sticking up in every direction. His frown made creases around his eyes which showed the stress he was feeling. His hazel eyes were so wide that I could see the flecks of gold in them. His lips spread in a forced smile showing a set of straight white teeth. “Excuse me, miss, but could I have a moment of your time?” He spoke with a sincere kindness that made me stop in my tracks. Usually, if a strange man came running over to me I would promptly tell him to go away and walk the other way. Maybe it was the way his eyes pleaded for a chance. Whatever it was about this man that made me say and do the following words and actions, was out of character for me.
“How can I help, sir?” I asked now curious of why this stranger was asking for my help. As he came closer to me I could tell he was a couple of years older than me and was dressed casually and was carrying a black backpack.
His eyes lit up for a moment then softened into sadness. He motioned for me to follow him into a side ally.
This is the second place where I broke my normal cautious character trait. In normal circumstances I would have run away if a anyone wanted me to go into a dark ally with them. I glanced around at the empty streets. Perfect. I’ll either die or actually help someone.
Once we were in the ally way we were suddenly very close together. He took a deep breath then started to speak. “If it eases any of your anxiety I’m not going to kill you. However, my time is short I need you to take the gun in my back pack and kill me with it.” He paused to gage my reaction for a moment.
“Why would I do that?” I asked so surprised that I couldn’t fully wrap my head around his request. Could I kill someone?
“If you do. You will save the universe. After you kill me you won’t even remember doing this I promise. Take it. I would explain the situation in more detail but unfortunately my time is coming to an end. Please help me help you.” He begged his eyes were filled with desperation, while pressing the cold metal of a pistol into my hand.
“How do you expect me to trust a stranger I just met?” I replied studying the lightweight pistol resting in my hand.
He flicked his eyes to mine and gazed intensly at me for a moment. He leaned in close and gently pressed his lips to mine. I accepted the sweet kiss for a moment. Then he pulled back. “The same way you trusted this stranger to kiss you.”
My heart was pounding in my chest. “How will I know it worked?” I asked while adjusting my grip on the gun.
“You’ll wake up in your bed like nothing happened and you’ll remember nothing of this moment,” he assured me.
“In that case, goodbye stranger. Thank you for saving the universe.” I replied shakily while slowly raising the gun to his head.
“No, thank you, stranger. You are the true savior.” He smiled at me and closed his eyes.
I squeezed my finger and braced myself for the noise and kick.
Bang!
The ringing in my ears was already fading as the body of the mystery man started to fall to the ground. The body didn’t touch the ground before everything went dark. Then silence followed.
I woke with sweat dripping down my forehead. However, I was in my bed in my house. I had the strangest feeling that I was forgetting something but I couldn’t remember. I shrugged the feeling away and went about my day feeling conent.
