The Conquered Beast (Continued 5)

After watching the world fly by as we glided through the night air I was lulled into a peaceful sleep. Eventually, I was woken by Gorgavitch landing and the sun peaking out over the horizon. We had landed in front of a large cave that was carved out of the side of the biggest mountain I had ever seen. He lumbered into his cave and crouched down so I could slide off his back.

My feet landed on the solid rock slab that made up the cave floor. I looked out of the entrance and saw that we had literally landed on the side of a mountain I could see where the edge ended and turned into a sheer drop. The cave itself was so expansive that my footsteps echoed and bounced off of the walls as I familiarized myself. A blue fire glow illuminated the cave as Gorgavitch lit a fire.

“I’ll be off to rest for a while. Settle wherever you would like.” He lumbered off to a darker corner of the cave so I couldn’t see him.

“Before you fall asleep. When should I be expecting your company?” I called to him while settling by the fire. I noticed that there were various blankets around the fire that were surprisingly soft.

“Few days, maybe a few weeks, depends on how fast they decide to travel. They think I’m being childish and overreacting to the fact the biggest threat to our species is now lose… again.” He sighed clearly annoyed.

“You mean to tell me that you’ve told your people about how Slytherix has escaped and disappeared and they aren’t taking you seriously?” I questioned now wanted more details about this threat.

I heard the rush of air flow out of Gorgavitch’s nostrils as he exhaled. His giant head appeared from the shadows and the blue light from the fire made his black scales shimmer blue. He took a moment to cast his golden eyes to give me a long stare. I could decipher a mix of a emotions in his eyes. There was a sadness that I hadn’t seen before mixed with an underlying anger. “I was one of the guards who were supposed to be watching Slytherix, which is why I know he has vanished. I don’t know how he was able to escape. He was in his cell when my shift was over but when I came back the next day the guard who took over my shift was dead and Slytherix was gone. My parents died fighting that murderer before he was imprisoned. If they hadn’t sacrificed themselves he would have won the first time. I have to find him before it’s too late.” As his voice trailed off he lowered his head and closed his eyes for a moment. I spotted drops of water start to leak out of his eyes.

He was close enough to me where I was able to reach his large scaley snout. I stood so I was just barely able to stretch my arms around the top of his jaw. “We’ll find him no matter what your people say when they get here.” I assured him not really knowing how to comfort my new friend. I knew that I know the pain of losing a parent, but I don’t know the fear of knowing your parent’s murderer is free.

He pressed his snout into my torso for a moment then pulled away. “I’m going to show you something, but I’m a little nervous for your reaction.” He stated, tilting his head slightly.

I gave him an inquisitive stare for a few minutes. “What could possible scare me away? I trusted a giant reptilian creature that I didn’t even know existed before a few days ago. Try me.” I cocked an eyebrow to show him that very little could surprise me right now. Instead of answering I watched as his head disappeared into the shadows.

I squinted into the dark as I saw a dark mass form into a shape that resembled- a man? Just as I was thinking that I should probably get more sleep since I was clearly seeing things a figure stepped into the light of the fire. The figure stood at least two heads taller than me, and he had a mop of jet black pin straight hair that fell across his forehead and brushed his eyebrows. I caught the pair of familiar golden eyes of Gorgavitch. He was dressed in sweat pants and a t-shirt. How is that possible? Must be another ability he has. The figure was strikingly handsome, which makes sense.

“You know I wasn’t even sure if I could still do that. It’s been a while.” His voice was less gravely but was still the same kind sassy tone. He was looking around as if he was in a new place. “It’s so much bigger in here than I realized.”

“You’re just full of surprises, aren’t you? How does this effect work?” I inquired.

“I can change forms however many times I want but it just takes a lot of energy, which is why I haven’t showed this form earlier.” He explained.

“That’s incredible.” I remarked while walking over to him. “I don’t know why you were nervous. There’s nothing wrong with the way you look either way.” I replied with a smile. “I think you look rather attractive as a human, which makes sense since you are the most handsome creature I have ever seen.” I added, sincerely.

His cheeks flushed slightly as he laughed. He took my hand in his and held it like it was made of glass. “I appreciate your kind words.” He smiled. “I think the nerves just come from being around you in general. It’s not even a feeling I dislike I just have never felt it before. You are the first human who has ever given me a chance. Most take one look at me and either try to hurt me or scream and run. You just looked at me with curiosity. It still surprises me that you have never flinched around me.” He let go of my hand and stumbled back slightly.

“Woah, Gorgavitch, easy there. Let’s sit down.” I moved so I could steady him.

“Sorry, I’m fine. This always makes me tired especially after a long flight. I just need a little sleep.” He assured me and before I could answer he was a sleep in my arms his long body sprawled half on me and half on the floor.

His head was resting on my shoulder and his long hair tickled my neck. I folded up a blanket to use as a pillow trying my best to not wake him. I gently shifted him onto the ground and pulled a different blanket over him. I set up a make shift bed and decided to sleep more now that I was on solid ground. Just as I was drifting to sleep I felt a slightly hesitant hand touch my fingers. I laced my fingers with his before sleep swept me into darkness.
