There’s no need for time now that I’m with him. My new name is Nissa. It surprised me how easily I slipped into my new life. I suppose I was always slipping into a new way of life because of my uncle. However, now that I am with him I am someone completely different. It’s been about a year maybe more since the plane crash.
Even though how we met was strange, Edwin and I have grown close over the months. We have a place on a mountain side that over looks a large body of sparkling blue water. We go out hunting during the day once a week. Then we come back here once we have enough meat to last us. It’s a simple life, but it’s something I didn’t know I needed until it was forced on me.
I peeked my eyes open to be greeted by the sight of a bare back with defined muscles developed by his line of work in the full moon light. His long chocolate brown hair cascaded down his back in soft waves. I could see the lines of old scars white as ghosts tracing their lines marking the survival of old wounds. As he turned I caught sight of a hint of a six pack before pulling the covers over him as he settled on the floor.
“Edwin, you don’t have to sleep on the floor. We’ve known each other long enough that I’m comfortable with sharing the bed with you. Just don’t read into the offer too much.” I suggested, only adding the last sentence because of my past. Edwin has never given me a reason to not trust him. He is the most loyal person I have ever met.
He flipped over onto his side and propped himself up on his pillow to face me. “Are you sure?” He raised an eyebrow.
“Yes,” I replied scooting my body towards the wall. “There is plenty of space.” I watched as he slowly got up and climbed into the bed next to me. He seemed slightly nervous for some reason.
“Can I tell you something personal?” His voice was soft and vulnerable.
“Always,” I spoke softly turning onto my side towards him.
“I’ve never slept with another person before.” he whispered, while staring at the ceiling.
“I’ve only read what it’s like in books. I haven’t been able to trust anyone enough to let them sleep in the same bed as me.” I admitted.
“What do the books say it feels like?” His voice held tones of curiosity as he turned to me.
“The books say it’s like being corressed in a warm blanket of safety. However, I wouldn’t know if the books are telling the truth.” I sighed, feeling my heart skip a beat.
He was silent for such a long moment that I thought he had fallen asleep. “Nissa, do you trust me?” He spoke slowly.
“Yes,” I spoke wondering if he could hear the hammering of my heart. “Do you trust me?”
“Yes I trust you. Is it okay if I hold you for the night?” He gently ran a warm hand down my arm which gave me goosebumps. “Nothing more I’ve always been curious about what it feels like to hold someone even if it’s just for the night.”
I smiled. “I would love to be held by you for the night.” I heard the words come out of my mouth before I could think my way out of agreeing.
He stretched out his arms and pulled me to his chest. I rested my head against his chest and listened to the beating of his heart. Eventually, our breathing became one and we both drifted into unconsciousness.
