“Before we leave, did either of you leave this van after leaving the building?” I ask wondering who Bo was warning me about earlier.
“No. Once we finished establishing who the leader is we noticed you two were gone. We decided to go back to the van to figure out what to do.” Oliver starts explaining. He speaks with a calm that’s almost believable. His only tick that gave his true emotions away is the fact that he would not hold eye contact with me for more than a half a second. Strange for someone who’s telling the truth.
“The only time we separated is when you took a piss break a little while ago,” James adds with a shrug. “Why do you care?” His brown eyes gaze into my blue with a firm intensity that gave me not choice but to believe him.
I hold his gaze for a long moment before answering. “I don’t really care. I was more curious because believe it or not there are more people than you who are after me. I just need to narrow down the list a little. My friend warned me someone was after me. He is the reason both Nora and I got the articles.” I explain while give a side glance to Nora who looks pensive.
“No. I wish we knew where you went. We honestly didn’t even get past deciding who was driving before you showed up again.” James assures me then looks at Nora for a moment frowning slightly.
“We just went to pick up these papers from his friend.” She rolls her eyes. “Are we leaving or not?”
“I think not,” Oliver’s tone lowers and becomes more like a growl and snatches Nora and pulls her to him.
“What the hell are you doing? Release me now!” She commands while struggling against him.
“No. Zizi is going to tell us who his friend is and how he got these top secret articles.” His eyes narrows and tells the unspoken message behind his words.
“And if I refuse?” I stall trying to figure out if he’s bluffing while trying to rework my plan.
“She dies,” he states while holding his knife to her throat. His voice holds no sign of any emotions which means he is most likely not bluffing. I discretely feel for my knife in my inner pocket only to find my pocket empty. Shit.
Before I could come up with a reply she interrupts our conversation.
“Why the hell would he care if I die? He only saved me from falling off the balcony because he knew you two would kill him if I died.” She snaps at him. “Use your damn head and quit being so dramatic. I’ll tell you again. Let. Me. Go. This is your final warning.” Her face turns to stone in the matter of seconds and her voice is colder than ice. Her glare could sear hole through titanium.
“Cute. You think you could hurt me. Who’s side are you on anyways? I thought you were my partner not his. You have obviously forgotten our mission.” He barks at her.
“You have obviously forgotten how to treat people.” She snarks and lifts her foot hard so her heel strikes his crotch causing him to drop the knife. She whips out my knife and holds it to his throat. Wait a minute, how did she get my knife? “I am on the side of the people. I thought that’s why K.NO.C.K.O.U.T. was created to help people. Who’s side are you on? ” She shouts stepping closer to him.
“That is why it was created. To help certain people. It was never about helping everyone which is why we didn’t advertise it as such. It’s the unspoken message, Nora.” Oliver drawls.
“Then consider this my resignation. What’s the point in only helping one group? That’s how other groups get overlooked and that’s something I have hardly begun to understand. I plan to learn how I can help everyone.” She spat.
“You can’t quit. The only way to leave is by-” his voice stops in the middle of his sentence.
“Death. I know but I’m not dying today.” She assures him as she pushes my knife into his jugular. She turns around wiping the blood onto Oliver’s shirt. “You’ve been awfully quiet James.”
“I didn’t know about anything!” He squeaks refusing to look at her. He even glances at the door of the van. I shuffle to the side so I’m between him and the door. While I was witnessing the scene unfold my mind spins. Do I run or wait it out?
“James I know a lier when I see one. Did you know Oliver’s plan?” She leaps over over to him. I see her eyes go round for a moment.
“I didn’t think he would kill you. I just know his piss break was longer than it should have.” He stammers. “Please, believe me.”
“You almost had me when you said ‘I didn’t think’ but then you ruined it by talking more.” She laughs without humor. “I trusted you. Both of you,” eventhough her voice was a whisper it sounds just as deadly, her eyes are flaming with emotions. “Now you try to kill me. All because they are scared of the truth coming out.” A tear slips down her cheek as she stabs my knife through her partners neck. She sinks to her knees dropping my knife next to her, and places her slim hands over her face.
“Are you going to kill me or join me?” I ask carefully sitting next to her and taking back my knife.
“I’ll join you for now. However, if you lie to me I will kill you,” she warns pulling her hands away from her face to make eye contact.
I could see the water marks from her tears that she tries to wipe away without me noticing. “I believe you. Let me bring you to a safe place I know where you can grieve for your ex partners. However, I would say we should get rid of the van and the bodies.” I suggest.
“There’s plenty of explosives in here. Between the two of us I’m sure we can rig this whole van to blow up. It would need to be big enough to convince them that all four of us died.” She said with a smirk.
“I have an idea or two. Show me what you’ve got.” I reply. Well this situation is more beneficial to me than my original plan. Thank you Nora.
