Zizi (Part 9)

I jump as a hand lands on my chest. My tired brain takes a moment to remember that there is a beautiful woman sleeping next to me. When she first fell back asleep she was laying on her back just barely close enough to me that her arm was brushing mine. Now she was part on me and part next to me. This is to say that she must be really sound asleep if she is choosing to lay like this. Her forehead is gently resting against my jaw line and one of her legs are wrapped around my left leg. Her hand is on my chest which feels so natural, which is strange to say about a woman that you hardly know but somehow trusts her completely.

I peek open my eyes and see that it’s almost 8:00am. Well she didn’t kill me in my sleep there’s one test passed. I haven’t slept in like this since my parents were alive. I lay there for a few more lovely minutes before detailing myself from her without waking her.

I quietly walk into the kitchen and look around for breakfast food. After finding stale cereal in the otherwise empty cabinets and a science experiment in the refrigerator I decide that I’ll go to the Cafe down the street that sells perfect cappuccinos and fresh donuts. I’ll get a variety of things since I don’t know what she likes. Before leaving I leave a note explaining where I went in case she wakes up before I get back.

I greet Sam as I enter the lobby from the elevator. “Good morning, Sam! I’m going to that Cafe down the street do you want anything while I’m there?”

“Good morning, Zizi! What puts you in such a good mood this morning? It’s not the woman is it?” Sam teases before continuing. “But since you’re offering I could go for a double chocolate donut with a coffee.” He ads with a belly laugh.

“The woman is Nora and she’s going to be sticking around for some time. I always offer to pick you up breakfast when you’re on the double shift.” I shoot back with a chuckle.

“Ah so it is the woman!” He exclaims unable to control his laughter.

“No it’s not what you think Sam. It’s way more complicated that it looks from a third party view.” I assure him. “Speaking of which if you happen to see her do your best to prevent her from leaving. It’s not safe around here for her to be walking around by herself.” I ask him because I knew he wouldn’t ask questions.

“Sure thing. I’m definitely going to try to steal her away from you though if she does come down here.” He smirks at me.

“Don’t blame me when you get your ass kicked then.” I snark back as I exit the building.

It doesn’t take me long to walk down the street to the cafe and put in the drinks and food order. It took them a few extra minutes since the order was larger than my usual cappuccino and jelly donut that I get most mornings. Today I ended up getting two of every type of donut they have plus an extra chocolate one for Sam and two coffees and two cappuccinos with a side of cream and sugar just to cover all my bases. They were able to box everything up in two boxes and one drink holder. I made sure to give them a really nice tip on my way out. By the time I make it back to my apartment building it was about 8:30am. I give Sam his breakfast.

“Thank you!” He calls after me as I head to the elevator.

I manage to unlock my apartment door and get inside without dropping anything. I set everything down on the counter just as Nora walks out of my bedroom looking incredible even though she just woke up. Goodmorning, Zizi,” she mumbles as she sees me. “Are there more people coming over or did you just not know what type of donut to get?” She ads with a half smile, seeing the two huge boxes of donuts.

“Well realized when I woke up this morning that I don’t have any food here and there’s a really good cafe down the street that makes their own donuts.” I let out a breath for a moment having a sudden thought. “I got a variety assuming that you like donuts. Do you like donuts? I also got a coffee and an extra cappuccino because I don’t know what you like.” I ramble for a moment.

“Well your instincts are right about me. I love donuts. I haven’t had a home made donut in years. I am also a sucker for a good cappuccino but I haven’t been able to find a good place to get one.” She tells me which relieves any anxiety I have.

“In that case I highly recommend you try this cappuccino. It’s the best one I’ve had around here.” I assure her as I hand her one of the cappuccinos. “I’ll give the extra coffee to Sam on the way out, once we’re done eating.” I shrug as I snag a jelly donut and bite into the warm sweet stickiness.

I notice how she holds the cup up to her lips for a moment appreciating the aroma before taking a sip. “Mmmmm.” She hums with pleasure as soon as the liquid coats her tastbuds. “Now that’s a good cappuccino.” She confirms. Then takes a chocolate covered cream filled donut and takes a bite out of it. “Holy shit this has no right to be this good!” She exclaims. “Thank you. This is really kind of you. What are we going to do with the extras?”

And she passes another test with flying colors. “I’m glad you asked. I usually just go knocking on the doors to see who wants whatever food I have left over. Most of the people who live in this apartment building can’t afford to buy themselves sweet foods and are too proud to ask for help so I gift them food whenever I can.” I explain.

She sat there staring at me for a long moment as she finishes her donut. She’s silent for so long that my curiosity got the better of me.

“What?” I say prompting her to say something.

“I’ve never met anyone who is somehow able to cause me to feel so conflicted about how I feel. There’s a part of me that’s telling me to not trust you because you could just be leading me on but the bigger part of me wants to believe and trust you. The more I learn about you the more I truly believe and trust you. I just can’t shake the feeling that you’ll kill me if I get too comfortable.” Even though I could hear the sincerity in her voice I was still stunned that she seems to have similar feelings about me that I have about her.

“If it makes you feel better. I have very conflicting feelings about you too. One part of me says that I should kill you before you turn on me, but the other part knows you have given me no reason to not trust your words.” I speak honestly while watching her face.

“I believe what you are saying but I also think that you’re a good enough lier to fool me. I’ll only kill you if you break my trust. You have my word.” She replies returning my honesty while helping herself to another donut.

“I’m glad the feeling is mutual.” I state unable to help my smirk. We finish eating in a pleasant silence.

“Ready to get started?” I ask her while handing her a box.

“Absolutely. Just let me put on some fresh clothes.” she replies. “Speaking of do you happen to have a washer and dryer? Or at least one in the building?” She adds as she stands up and throws out her now empty cup.

Oh that’s right I did sort of cause her to lose all of her things. “There is one in the building, but we can go to the store if you need to get some things. Since all of your stuff is gone now. I’ll buy anything you need just ask.” I offer.

“Are you sure you don’t mind? I feel a little awkward about just accepting all this stuff from you.” Her slight blush let’s me know that she truly hates feeling needy. A feeling I can relate to.

“I enjoy helping people it’s what I do around here. I’ll take you to some nice shops around here after we make our rounds.” I laugh reassuring her.

“Okay sounds like a plan.” She agrees and slips into the bathroom to get ready.
