My Friend The Reaper

Continued.

“It’s strange walking with someone who is so kind to me,” the hooded man spoke softly. “Most try to talk me out of taking them as if I have a choice. I don’t decide who dies. I just lead the chosen ones to death who takes them.”

“I’ve never been certain about anything in life except we all die. When I saw you I knew it was my time to leave my worries behind and face whatever comes next. It’s something out of our control.” My voice comes out strong but soft.

He was quiet for several moments before speaking. “I have never known what it’s like to be living or dead I just exist halfway between. What is it like to be alive?” He asks his face hidden in a shadow as he faces me.

“Being alive is feeling everything that you experience. Being alive means you go through suffering, pain, happiness, relief, hope and everything in between. It’s not really an experience that I can explain fully. Everyone experiences being alive differently though. In my experience I’ve lived through many wonderful and terrible things. However I would not trade it for the world because it has made me who I am today.” I spoke thoughtfully.

“That sounds entertaining at least.” He spoke slowly sounding wistful. “It’s a gift and a curse this life I have but it’s the only one I’ve known.”

“It seems like it would be lonely at times, but I’ve always liked being alone. It’s quiet and I can think straight.” I replied not exactly sure where this conversation was going.

He stopped suddenly causing me to bump into him. “Sorry, I just had a thought.” He turned to me again but this time he removed his hood. Revealing a face that resembled a human like face but it was more narrow and his eyes were completely black pits. I felt like I should have been scared but there was nothing about him that scared me. “There comes a time in a reader’s life where they can choose to pass on their duties to another being that accepts the job.” He paused for a moment looking nervous. “I won’t blame you if you reject my offer and just want to continue to whatever comes next. I’ve been doing this for centuries now and I’m starting to feel the effects of it.”

I stop him before he back tracks. “I accept your offer. But I must ask how do you know I’m a good fit and what happens to you?” I placed a hand on his shoulder.

I can feel him relax after hearing my words. “I just feel it. As for me I finally get to truly rest once the process is finished. Death is the one who makes it official.”

Before I could reply there was a cloud of fog that engulfed us and a booming voice. “YOU CALLED REAPER!” Then a silhouette of a man emerged out of the fog.

“Yes, sir, I have called to say that I have found someone to replace me.” He spoke with a nod.

There was a long moment of silence and I could feel an od sensation come over me.

“Ah, I see. Well, my dear friend, you have brought me centuries of excellent service so you deserve to retire. I must admit that I will miss you but it seems like your replacement is trust worthy from what I can observe.” Death gave me a glance over and a wink letting me know he was the one causing me to feel odd before continuing. “You’ll know what to do once the transition is complete.” He directed his words at me.

“This is where we say goodbye my friend. I wish we had more time but we will see each other again one day when you retire.” The reaper assured me before disappearing into the fog with death.

There was a rush a wind and I was suddenly dressed in robes that were familiar to me. I just knew where I needed to go so I started my journey as the newest reaper feeling content.

The end.
