Safire and Maydire Chapter 3

“Who I am is no concern of yours.” Then directed her words at Maxwell as he started to shift. “If you stir I will shoot you,” the shadow warned their bow glinting in the moonlight.

“You’ll be dead before you draw your first arrow.” I shot back carefully aiming my arrow. “Show yourself!”

“I would rather die.” They growled back taking a step forward.

I let the end of my arrow slipe threw my fingers and fly threw the air. The arrow was stopped only by the skull after it went through their eye. They dropped to the ground with a thud. “Fine. Be my guest.” I whispered deadly calm.

Maydire neighed in a tone that I knew meant that rogue wasn’t alone. They never do travel alone.

I spun in time to dodge the arrow. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted the arrow stuck in the spot where Maxwell was moments ago. I looked up in time to see Maxwell shooting an arrow over my head and hitting the person who had almost shot me. “You’re pretty decent with a bow.” I nodded at him with a smile, before turning to see how many more of them there were.

“I’m pretty decent at many things.” He smirked as he walked up to me.

I rolled my eyes and focused my attention on the tree line. “Even if I can’t see you I know where you are.” I saw a shadow move and I shot an arrow towards it. I hear the unmistakable sound of a gasp then silence. I paused to listen to the sounds of the forest. I heard the various wildlife moving away from us but there was no more sounds of human movement for now.

I felt his eyes on me. “You’re obviously a trained fighter, but what are you trained in?”

“A little of this, a little of that, and whatever I learn in between.” I shrugged. I wasn’t being vague on purpose there isn’t one type a fighting I stick to. I just learn what I can and combine a my training into my own fighting style.

“You’re just full of surprises.” He remarked as he settled back down onto the ground.

I checked on Maydire to make sure she settled back down so she could sleep for the rest of the night. I could feel my exhaustion catching up to me. I sunk to the ground and put my bow next to me. “We need to keep moving.” I sighed.

“Yes but after you get some rest. I’ll keep watch and wake you if there’s more of them.” Maxwell assured me.

“Okay. I’ll trust you for tonight. Don’t make me regret it.” I mumbled as I crawled into my sleeping bag and quickly falling into a deep sleep.
