By the time I had woken up from my rest I noticed that the sun was well above me letting me know it was well into the afternoon. No wonder I’m starving better look around for some food. Maydire still looked like she was sleeping peacefully, so I carefully removed myself from her side and searched the surrounding woods for food. Once I had gathered supplies I crept towards the water. I let my eyes take in my surroundings and notice that Maxwell was nowhere to be seen. However, I did spot a pile of clothes though. “Maxwell?” I called while making my way towards the waterfall.
“Good morning sleepy head. I’m behind the waterfall you have to see this. The water is surprisingly warm it feels great.” His voice called from behind the waterfall. “Don’t worry I’m mostly decent.” He added with a chuckle. His voice sounded like it was bouncing off of walls.
I wonder if there’s a cave back there. I thought to myself. Unable to resist the temptation of discovering something new I agreed. “Okay I’ll be there in a minute.” I replied while looking around to see if there was a way to get behind the waterfall without getting fully into the water.
Suddenly I felt a velvety nose nuzzling my cheek. “Hey there, Maydire, could you guard our things for me while I take a look behind the waterfall?” While I spoke she laid behind me so she could rest her head on my shoulder.
She blew air out of her nose and gently nudged my head with hers.
“Thank you. You know what to do if anything strange happens.” I replied while kissing her nose. I stood up so I could shed a few layers of clothing. Once I was down to my underwear I tested the water by slowly dipping my foot into the water. As soon as the water hit my foot I took it out again. Wow that is really warm. It must be a hot spring. The water wasn’t hot by any means so it’s more of a warm spring. I jumped in and started to swim towards the waterfall.
Once I had made it to the waterfall I notice that there was a ledge that made it so I could stand with my head out of the water. I looked up to see a huge arched stone ceiling that went so far back that I couldn’t see the back of the cave. The most incredible detail about this cave is that it looked like there were huge crystals growing from the ceiling and the walls of the cave. “How does no one know about this place?” I uttered in awe.
“How do you know that no one knows about this place?” He replied while walking over to me.
“Because these crystals would be long gone by now if someone knew these were here.” I explained.
“Good point. It’s a gorgeous sight. It’d be a shame to ruin it over some money.” He replied while looking around.
“I agree.” I said with a smile. “Let’s stay here for as long as we can to see if anyone else stumbles across this place like we did or if this was just pure luck.”
“Sure. I wouldn’t mind sticking around here for a while, but what about your home?” He replied.
“The place where you found me is one of many places where I live I don’t have a home I can go back to.” I corrected him.
“Fair enough. Let’s stick around and maybe we can make this place a home.” He answered with a smile.
“Time will tell.” I smirked up at him noticing how much taller he was than me. The waterline went up to my collar bone which means that the water came up to the middle of his ribs.
A low rumble of thunder caused a high pitched winny come out of Maydire. “Maydire, it’s just some thunder. Stay there I’ll come-” I tried to calm her down but the splash of water indicated that her fear overcame her. “Maydire come to me you’ll be safe in here.” I could see that she was quickly swimming towards me so it didn’t take long for her to reach us. As soon as she could she hopped up on the ledge so she was out of the water.
“You stay here and I’ll go grab the rest of our stuff and bring it back.” He told me while he jumped back into the water.
I nodded at him and made my way out of the water and towards Maydire as the rumbling slowly grew louder as the storm approached. I watched as Maxwell swam out past the waterfall to our belongings. I caught myself staring at his physical features for far too long. I shook my head at myself.
“Maydire, I think I’m losing my mind. Since when did I get so soft?” I mumbled to her.
She looked and me a tilted her head as if to say you already know why you’re different lately.
“You’re right I already know the answer to that, and I have to admit it’s really nice having another friend around.” I was interrupted by Maydire snorting.
I turned in time to see Maxwell coming back with our things. Somehow me managed to keep our belongings dry during his swim.
“Thank you,” I smiled at him when his lanky but muscular build came closer.
“You’re welcome.” He replied while setting down our things on the ledge next to Maydire. Then he settled on the ground.
Suddenly, the sky let lose sheets of water as a flash of lightening lit up the sky. Another crack of thunder rumbled the ground beneath us causing Maydire to snort in disapproval.
“It looks like we are going to be stuck here for a while.” I noted while squinting in the dark cave.
“Sounds like a good time to take a nap,” Maxwell chuckled while laying down.
“I’ll wake you if anything interesting happens.” I replied eventhough I could already hear his deep breathing.
“Hopefully there’s nothing else in here with us that I can’t see,” I muttered to Maydire while trying to get my eyes to adjust to the darkness.
