Safire and Maydire Chapter 11

The evening storm slapped the waters surface with water droplets. This wouldn’t be a bad place to call home. I’ve never had a home before. I just don’t know if it’s safe yet. I thought to myself while I put on dry clothes. I sighed wishing there was a way to light a fire for the night. I leaned against the soft warm mass that was Maydire so I could eat some of the berries and nuts I found earlier.

Suddenly there was a deep rumble that I felt through my entire body. “Maydire, please tell me that was you or thunder.” I muttered knowing it was neither.

The rumble grew louder and started to sound more like a snarl. It was coming from the darkest part of the cave. I glanced over at Maxwell who was still sound asleep. “Maxwell get up now!” I hissed while wishing I had more arrows. I’ll just have to use my knife if I need to.

“What’s going on?” He grumbled while running his eyes.

“Listen,” I whispered while leaning over to grab my knife off my belt. What I saw next stopped me in my tracks. There was a moment where the entire cave was lit up by the perfect strike of lightening and I saw the light glint off of a pair of pure black eyes that belongs to a black wolf pup standing alone in the cave. My entire body froze. Shit. Where is the mother?

“If I didn’t know what it grows into I’d say it’s super cute.” Maxwell remarked.

I shot him a look before I put up my hands and tried calming the scared animal down. “Hey there little wolf pup it’s okay we won’t hurt you. There’s no need to be scared of us.” While I spoke to it I could see the barred teeth slowly hiding themselves. Eventually, the little pup became more curious than scared and came over to us and sniffed my hand and made itself at home in my lap.

“We should really get out of here before it’s mother comes back.” Maxwell commented while looking around.

“I agree and it looks like this place with flood soon if the rain doesn’t let up.” I informed while I noticed how fast the water line had risen already. Well so much for keeping our things dry we will have to swim back to the shore if the water gets any higher. Through the water droplets I spotted her on the grass next to the pond. A stunning creature with a black coat of fur clumped together from the water. “Hello momma wolf.” I exhaled. She was pacing at the edge of the water looking paniced. The water kept rising and the rain kept pouring down.

“We need to leave now. Let’s help the wolf pup get back to it’s mother and hopefully they won’t hurt us.” Maxwell replied while putting his clothes back on.

I looked at Maydire for a moment. “Okay. I’ll go take the wolf pup back and you stay here with Maydire for a few minutes until they are safe. We don’t want the mother to run away.” I suggested while scooping the small black wolf up in one arm.

“Good luck. I’ll be close behind.” Maxwell replied.

I carefully made my way down the ledges and swam my way back across towards the large black wolf. Her eyes never left me as I slowly moved towards her. I made sure to keep her baby above the water and in her sight at all times. As soon as I was within arms reach of the grass I gently laid the pup down and backed away so the mother could greet her child. When I was far enough away she trotted over to the small black wolf and sniffed it and scooped it up in her mouth and ran off disappearing into the woods. I pulled myself up onto the muddy ground and waved over Maxwell and Maydire.

I watched as Maxwell started to gesture at me which didn’t make sense because I hadn’t seen anyone else around. However, the rain was able to muffle a set of footsteps and I felt a hand slip over my mouth. “You haven’t heard what the Ravclaws have to offer yet, Safire Dire. It’s a deal so good that you won’t be able to refuse it. A voice growled in my ear. Before I could react I felt a sharp pain blossom from my right temple all the way around my skull.

Just before darkness overtook me I thought Maydire, Maxwell run!
