I woke with a pounding headache and a slight confusion about where I was. However, the more details I took in the more I remembered. The bars and dirt floor should have been the details that told me that I was in a dungeon, but it was the chains with the skeletons still attached to it that told me I was in the Ravclaw dungeon. Damn it, Safire, look what you’ve done. You had the nerve to think that you could make a friend and now you end up in that friend’s parent’s dungeon. “Maydire? Maxwell?” I whispered into the shadows that were cast by the torchlight.
“No one here by those names. It’s just me, Tod.” A low voice spoke from the shadows. I could only see a pair of legs and an arm sticking out from the darkness. “At least I used to be called Tod…” he trailed off.
“Why aren’t you called Tod anymore?” I asked, slowly turning around.
“Usually, once they see my face they keep screaming until I’m forced to shut them up by eating them.” He drawled as he slowly shifted and I caught a flash of- no- scales?
“Show yourself. I won’t scream if you don’t eat me.” I answered beyond curious of this man?
A snout of an crocodile peaked its way out of the shadows followed by a pair of huge green reptilian eyes with a slit for the pupil. “You wouldn’t scream if you were dead.” He leaned forwards.
“Death doesn’t scare me. I’ve seen too much in my short life. What happened to you?” I asked getting the sense that I was safe from being eaten for now.
“I was someone who refused the job I was offered so they experimented on me and others. I’m the only one left.” He explained with a sigh.
“Ah there’s something we have in common. I didn’t even wait to hear the offer. I got their son back to them then ran away and he decided to come with me.” I revealed.
“You fell in love with a Ravclaw. Now that’s dangerous. There’s no escaping the life of a Ravclaw.” Tod warned.
“I haven’t fallen in love. I took a chance for a friend and ended up here. I just hope they are safe somewhere.” I let my words trail off.
“No one else has been brought down here.” My new acquaintance informed me.
“Is this the only way out?” I asked Tod.
“Yes, but there is a guard that comes once per day to give us some food.” He replied.
“Then we wait.” I stated while settling next to Tod.
“For the guard?” He questioned looking as skeptical as a crocodile could look.
“Yes. Then once he comes we run and get out of here.” I announced.
“How are the two of us going to get out of here? There are many other guards out there. There’s no way we will get out alive.” He scoffed.
“I know how to fight and you have a head of a crocodile so I’m sure we will be okay.” I answered, calmly.
“I would rather die fighting then waiting for death in here.” He shrugged. “I’m in.”
“Then we wait.” I smiled while leaning against the wall.
