Safire and Maydire Chapter 15

I don’t remember Maxwell taking my hand but I ripped myself away from his grasp and collapsed next to Maydire. There was so much blood that I couldn’t even see the wound. “No, no, no, no, no,” I muttered to myself as her breathing became more and more rocky. I desperately searched the area for anything to stop the bleeding. Seeing nothing I took a deep breath to calm myself before speaking. “If she dies I will never take your job. If she lives I will listen to the description of the job.”

“For someone who has been trained by The Shadows of Darkness you show more emotion than I was expecting.” Maxwell’s father drawled with a smirk on his face. “If she dies you’ll be stronger.”

My blood ran cold at his mention of The Shadows of Darkness. I silently glanced at Maxwell who showed the shock I felt. He caught my glance and began speaking before I could say anything.

“How do you know about them, father?” His look of shock quickly hardened into a look of confusion.

“I’m their boss, son.” He stated simply. “Well technically anyone with the Ravclaw name is their boss. However, it doesn’t really matter since someone destroyed them all but” He paused before finishing his sentence and stared at me, “one.”

I glared at him knowing that I couldn’t verify if what he’s telling me is true. He knows the name and that alone makes him a threat. I turned my back to him and ripped off the bottom half of my shirt with my knife. I had to try to stop the bleeding from the wound on her side. “If you won’t help her I will. I always have and I’ve never needed anyone’s help with that.” I spat while pressing the cloth to the wound. Now that I was closer I could see that the wound was small but it went deep into her skin. It was the shaking that was worrying me. I pulled my cloak to the side so it would cover her. “What did this to her?” I demanded while I held the wound shut.

“One of my beautiful creations.” He responded with a smirk.

“Describe this creation of yours to me.” I stated deadly calm.

“It’s a creature that’s small but mighty. I don’t know what it’ll do to a horse but humans do not take kindly to them.” He spoke deliberately his smirk widened as his words left his mouth.

“Parasites!” Maxwell exclaimed, clearly outraged. “I knew I didn’t want any part in this family. What do you mean that humans don’t take kindly to them?”

I stared at Maydire’s face and I could tell she was in pain. “I’m so sorry you don’t deserve this.” I whispered she stared back giving me those kind eyes that she always does as if she was trying to tell me that it’ll be okay.

“They go through a change and usually die within a day or two.” Mr. Ravclaw shrugged showing no signs of lying.

“Maydire, I love you so much. You’ve been the best friend that I’ve always needed. I’m sorry I couldn’t save you from death, but I can save you from being some rich prick’s science experiment.” I uttered just for her ears. I felt the tears start to sting the backs of my eyelids as I gathered the courage to do what I needed to. I removed my hand from the bloody rag of my shirt to steady the hand holding the knife. I kissed her snout one last time and looked away and screamed my pain out as I did the unthinkable. “Goodbye my dearest of friends.”

“No! I didn’t think you would actually do it before the transformation was complete!” Mr. Ravclaw exclaimed panic coating his words.

“Speak now or I’m killing your father, Maxwell.” My voice was oddly steady and my mind was unusually calm. I felt different.

“Together.” Maxwell spoke steadily and calmly.

“Wait.” He begged as his eyes flickered with fear. “If you kill me it won’t end.”

“We’re waiting.” I replied while giving Maxwell a look while trying to keep my shattered heart together. I kept my knife clutched in my hand ready for anything.

“Speak quickly and precisely my patience is running thin. What won’t end?” Maxwell rolled his eyes and lowered his knife.

“The experiments won’t end if you kill me there are plenty of-” he started but was interrupted by Todd scooping him head first into his mouth.

“Sorry, I didn’t want to listen to his long drawn out speech about how there’s others who will continue his work and what not.” Todd explained with a burp. “Wow two people in one day that must be a new record.” He added with a shrug.

“Who’s the other person?” Maxwell questioned.

“The guard. He tried to stab me shortly after we got in here so I ate him. I didn’t want to bother you since Maydire needed help.” He explained simply.

“I honestly forgot about that guard. Thanks for dealing with him.” I replied looking at Maydires corpse. I felt the hot tears dripping down my face. I didn’t even care that everyone could see. “I can’t leave her here.”

“I could carry her for you. I’m stronger than the average person.” Todd offered gently.

I wrapped my cloak around her so it covered her body and nodded my reply since my vocal cords stopped working. As I stood I wrapped my arms around me to keep myself warm.

“I’ll lead us to the stables. There are wagons there that we can attach to a horse.” He explained while wrapping his own cloak around my shoulders.

I gave him a small smile as a thank you. “We’ll all be safe back where you and I first met. You two can stay with me as long as you want.” I sighed really wishing that I could wish myself home.

“Perfect. Let’s go.” He smiled at me and started to walk down the hall.
