A One Shot

I could feel the adrenaline flowing through my limbs. The feeling was so intense that my entire body was trembling. I slowly took in oxygen in an attempt to calm myself. Where am I? I force my legs to keep moving. I felt a stinging sensation as a tree branch whipped my tender cheek. My vision blurred from the tears building in my eyes as the crisp fall air swept the water droplets down the corners of my eyes. There was no moon tonight, so I could only move blindly in the dark hoping that I would make it out in time. It didn’t matter how much noise I made while escaping. I was in it’s territory causing me to have the disadvantage.

Suddenly, I went to step on the leaves and instead of hitting solid ground below the leaves I hit nothing. I was running too fast to stop. I felt the upper half of my body fly forwards as the bottom half of my body fell downwards. I threw my hands out desperately looking for anything to hold onto. My right hand caught hold of a clump of dirt for a moment but the dirt had no intentions of holding my weight. I was left to fall with the dirt still clutched in my hand. I didn’t dare scream as I fell. I couldn’t let it know I was in trouble. It felt like I was falling a long time before my feet hit something solid. The rest of my body collapsed clumsily on the ground. I laid perfectly still for a few minutes listening. My body was throbbing from the adrenaline and aching from running for hours. After nothing I sit up and look around and see nothing but darkness. I couldn’t even see the opening that I fell through let alone any way out. After not being able to hear anything I started to feel around the area that I fell into. After feeling around for a good ten minutes I gathered that I was in a hole and there was no good way to get out. I decided that all I could do is try to get some rest and wait until the sun comes up. I curled up on the ground and shut my eyes hoping to sleep.

After a few hours I was startled awake by the sensation of something being thrown on me. I cracked open an eyelid to see what was touching me and saw that there was a pile of dirt around me. I could tell it was early morning by the small amount of sun peaking it’s way into the hole I fell in. I glanced up and the sight made my heart stop. I could see someone throwing dirt into the hole with a shovel.

“Hey! I’m down here! I need some help!” I yelled hoping that whoever was up there would be able to hear me.

The person paused and came to the edge of the hole so that I could see them properly. I immediately knew it was a mistake to speak. “I know you’re down there. I made this hole for you. I was going to kill you before putting you in it, but since you’re already down there I don’t see the point in taking you out.” They shrugged and disappeared from view for a moment.

The dirt kept coming.

In a panic I grabbed at the dirt walls surrounding me and tried to climb. Now that I could see I was able to find some hand and foot holds. I got about half way up before there was a searing pain in my temple that was so intense that I lost my footing and before I hit the ground my world went black.

The dirt kept coming.

When I woke again I could taste the dirt in my mouth. There was so much pressure on me that I couldn’t move. I couldn’t see. I couldn’t breath. I felt the dirt cram itself into my lungs as my instincts fought to stay alive. My last thought before the blissful darkness overtook me was being buried alive is exactly how imagined it would be.

Terrifying.
