This story takes place during a time when Halloween fell on the same night as the second full moon that October. The silvery glow of the moon cast a soft light over the little a-frame house by the lake.
The house was built so close to the lake that one could jump off the deck and into the water. This lake was not a natural lake. Meaning the owner of the house was the one who created this massive lake. The depth of the lake was unknown to everyone but the creator. The water in the lake was so filthy that submerging your hand a few inches was enough to lose sight of it.
Nobody who had come to this lake had returned from their visit. The disappearances spurred rumors of a creature who lived in the forest or in the waters. There were also rumors about the occupant of the house by the lake. No one really knew who lived in that house but the rumors said that there was a young man who lived their with his father. The house was in a small clearing with some fields that they were able to grow food in.
The rumors is what brought me here in the first place. Here as in the place where people would go explore and never return. I was trudging through the branches and leaves looking for this rumored clearing. Just when I thought I was lost I stumbled into a field of wheat. I pushed through it until I had found the water’s edge. I saw with my own eyes the thick black film that was in the water hiding whatever creature that may be lurking.
I glanced around to see if anyone else was around. Seeing no one I grabbed a stick and poked the surface of the water. It wasn’t windy this evening so I watched the ripples in the water fade. Just before I let the stick go I feel it ripped out of my hands and pulled under the water. Is this the creature?
“She’s hungry tonight. She hasn’t eaten in a couple of days. I thought no one would be coming out this way after the last disappearance. I wonder how many the town can take before they all just leave me alone.” I hear a high patched voice drone from behind me.
I turned around to catch the blue eyes of a very beautiful petite woman. “I’m sorry to intrude. I’ve just been wondering if the rumors are true.” I stuttered, while falling over in surprise. “Who’s hungry?”
“My pet of course. No one has a pet like mine. She is so unique that most don’t think she exists.” She paused for a moment. “What rumors are you referring to?”
“The ones that say that people don’t come back from here because of a monster in the lake.” I replied getting a terrible feeling in my chest. I slowly backed away from her.
“Oh! Those ones! Well I can confirm that they are true. Only she’s no monster. She is just trying to feed her hunger and get some privacy.” She explained while taking a few steps towards me.
Without thinking I backed further away from her until one hand dipped into the cold water. I never had time to pull my hand back before there was a sharp pain in my arm. There was no time to process the tentacle wrapping around my arm before I was being dragged backwards into the lake.
The last thing I heard was the cackling lady. The last thing I saw was the dark water all around me. The last thing I felt was sharpness and pain. The last thing I did was scream with bubbles pouring out of my mouth until I couldn’t feel anything at all.
