Waking Up in Space (5)

“You’re doing great. It’s almost done. I knew I couldn’t be the only one who finds the scan ticklish.” Sébastien encouraged me with a smile. I looked up at him and noticed that he had incredibly unique opaque blue eyes.

“Thanks.” I chuckled then winced. Now that my adrenaline had started to wear off I could feel the sharp pain building every time I took too sharp of a breath. I noticed that my mouth felt like sandpaper and my head felt like it was going to fall off my neck.

The scanner suddenly made many beeping sounds and the light turned red. “Well shit not a single broken bone but if you don’t get hydrated and some nutrients soon you’ll pass out.” He informed me. Then added “I’ll be right back.” And ran off out of my sight.

“Is he like this with everyone or just women?” I inquired hoping the kindness was genuine. A groan escaped me as I moved to put my sweatshirt back on.

“Sébastien is the type of man that will help anyone who needs help. He’s not scared to show how he truly feels and will not be shy about not liking people. He has saved my life so many times that I’ve lost count. He’s the closest person I have to call family since my blood family is dead.” Oliver spoke calmly but with conviction. I watched as his eyes darkened with sadness at a distant memory.

“My blood family is dead as well.” I shared while putting a hand on his shoulder. “How did yours die?”

“From a disease that took most of my home planet’s population. The only reason why I wasn’t infected is because I was away at school. Those of us who managed not to contract it were forced to leave. I met Sébastien while I was working a job that he happened to be working at the same time, so we decided to pool resources and get ourselves a ship so we could continue working together.” He answered. “We can take on bigger jobs and get twice the amount of pay. How did your family die?” He added.

“Here. Drink this it’ll give you all the hydration and nutrients you need.” Sébastien unknowingly interrupted us as he came back. “Oh and eat this it will help reduce the pain and will heal you faster.” He added as he handed me a a jar that had liquid the consistency of a smoothy in it and a small orange pill.

I thanked him while taking the pill and jar from him, and then turned back to Oliver. “I’m sorry about your family.” I replied gently squeezing his arm then released it. “My family died in a horrible car accident on their way to get me from the last day of school. They collided with an oil truck and it all caught on fire. It turns out the driver of the truck was drunk and happened to cross over the line and hit their car. My parents and brother just happened to be the ones to get hit.” I paused with the sudden realization that as of October 31st, 2057 I would be a full year older than my older brother ever was. I quickly pushed the thought from my mind. “I’ve lived alone ever since the accident five years ago.”

“Ah, I see I’ve walked into a cheery conversation.” Sébastien remarked quickly picking up on what we were talking about. “If it makes you feel any better I never knew my parents. They dumped me off someplace when I was ten years old. Eventually, I saved Oliver’s ass when we got cornered by some dangerous people.” Sébastien added to the cheery subject. “Stuck together ever since.”

“I mean there’s not much else a pair of twelve and fifteen year old orphans can do. We’ve saved each other’s asses more times than I can count by now.” Oliver shrugged.

I took a sip out of the jar and my taste buds were assaulted with a mix of super sweet and super sour all at once. I had to concentrate in order to swallow it. It wasn’t exactly a bad flavor it was just a flavor I’ve never tasted before. I must have made a face because suddenly Oliver burst out laughing.

“See, Sébastien, it’s not just me being mean about it. It has a strange flavor but it works perfectly.” He directed his words at Sébastien.

“It’s not a terrible flavor I’ve just never tasted anything like it before.” I explained then quickly drank the rest of it along with the pill. I swear I wouldn’t normally accept random medicine from strangers but these were not normal circumstances. By the time I finished the drink I was already feeling way better. “Wow this works fast.” I commented as the pain in my ribs started to subside.

“Yeah, all you need is one of those drinks per day to stay alive and healthy. The pill works fast as well. You should be completely healed within twenty four hours.” Sébastien informed me.

“That’s incredible! Thank you again for everything. You two are the nicest people I’ve met in a very long time.” I beamed a smile at both of them.

They both smiled back. “Ready for that tour?” Oliver asked after a few minutes.
