Safire and Maydire Chapter 6

Somehow I found myself sitting at the largest dinner table I have ever seen. I don’t know how Maxwell was able to convince me to stay to eat with them after they gave me the money I was promised. While speaking with Maxwell’s parents they were nice but their tones of kindness had undertones of intimidation that made me want to run back to Maydire who is being taking care of in the stables. I haven’t parted with her like this ever. She seemed okay when I left her with the stable help.

“Where is it you said you come from? Which family, dear?” I heard the voice of Joan, Maxwell’s mother ask.

“I didn’t say. I come from the woods and I don’t know who my family is.” I replied evenly while picking at the steak and potatoes in front of me.

“That must be hard not knowing where you come from or who you are.” Maxwell’s father, Garrison, commented.

“I know how to handle myself so I’ve been okay with it.” I half lied and half told the truth. I really just wanted to go home at this point. It’s not that I disliked them I just have a feeling they want something from me now that they have me here.

“We are always looking for people who know how to handle themselves if you’re looking for work that is.” Joan mused.

“Mother, don’t ruin dinner with business talk. She’s not interested.” Maxwell cut in before I could reply.

“Let her speak for herself, Maxwell. She doesn’t even know what we can offer her.” Joan quieted him.

“Or the hidden strings that come with your offers.” He muttered to himself.

“I’m not looking for work at the moment. I appreciate the offer and the food and hospitality but I really should start my journey back before it’s too late.” I assured her.

“You must stay the night. It is already past 9. Please there is no problem. We have plenty of spare rooms. Maxwell can show you to one.” Garrison replied kindly.

“If it’s not an inconvenience I would appreciate a place to rest.” I replied slowly wondering if this is truly a smart idea.

“Follow me,” Maxwell replied while standing.
