After a long time Maxwell broke the silence. “I can’t help my curiosity I have to ask. Who are the ones who captured you?” He spoke evenly with a small smile on his lips while he leaned over my shoulder as we rode to his family’s home.
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes before answering him. “If you must know they were known as The Shadows of Darkness.” I sighed knowing he’ll keep asking questions that I’ll keep answering for some reason.
“Wait that’s real? I thought those were just made up stories.” He replied sounding genuinely surprised.
“The stories make them sound pleasant. Their true nature was much worse.” I muttered internally cringing at the memory of them and what they did.
“The stories say they capture children and sell them off to whoever is rich and sick enough to buy anyone. They would kill anyone who threatened them. You talk about them like they are gone.” He remarked while staring at me.
I met his gaze and held it while I spoke. “They are all dead.” I spoke evenly while my stomach twisted at the memories. “The stories have the general details right. The reality is they train children to be killers. They would torture the compliance out of us. They had us doing terrible things for them. If we didn’t satisfy their needs they would execute us one by one.” I physically shuddered as images of my friends dying entered my brain.
“How is it that you are the only one who survived?.” He questioned his honey comb brown eyes pleading for more details.
“The day they gave me to the former Mayor was also my escape from them. Once I had my strength back I made sure that none of them would be kidnapping children ever again.” I explained with a sigh breaking the eye contact. This was the first time I have told anyone the truth about my past. I rested my hands on either side of Maydire neck.
“I can tell that this is a test to see if you can trust me. You can trust me, Safire. Thank you for sharing.” He spoke gently and put a hand on my shoulder.
Something about the tone of his voice told me that I can trust him. “I hope I can trust you. Don’t tell anyone what I’ve told you.” I lifted one hand from Maydire and placed it gently over Maxwell’s hand on my shoulder.
“I promise I won’t tell anyone what you’ve told me.” He replied gently while giving my shoulder a slight squeeze
“We are the only two people who know the truth, so I’ll know who to go to if the secret gets out.” I warned firmly. I remove my hand from his as my eyes catch the sight of a huge iron gate with stone towers on either side blocking our path.
“I’ll keep that in mind. I almost forgot about the gate. Don’t worry I know the gate keeper.” He drawled casually looking around.
I rolled my eyes. I should have known of course his family would have a gate and gate keeper there’s probably a mansion to go with it.
“Charles? Are you there?” He called out.
An elderly man came walking out of a door from one of the stone towers. “Well, well, well, look who’s back. What took you so long to get out of prison, Maxwell?” He sassed while raising an eyebrow knowingly before opening the gates for us.
“I had no way of getting in touch with the family. Plus it would have been a much longer journey if it wasn’t for Safire.” He replied smoothly hopping off of Maydire to give Charles a hug.
Maydire snorted and tossed her head as she took in her surrounds.
“I should really say thanks to Maydire. She did most of the work.” He corrected himself before I had the chance to.
“It’s nice to meet you both. I’m guessing he told you he’s going to pay you for the trouble so I’ll let them know you are on your way.” Charles chuckled with a knowing smile.
“Thank you,” Maxwell responded while pulling himself onto Maydire’s back again.
